All Eyes On Mawuko Abosseh

Biography

Mawuko ABOSSEH is a self-taught visual artist of Togolese origin. In his works he deals with several themes, one in particular being the stool which in his language means “Atiklè”, a symbol of power, authority, sovereignty, submission and ambition. The artist lives and works in Lomé, Togo.

Q&A

How did the idea come up to incorporate “tabourets” in your work?
In our religious beliefs, the stool being a household tool is part of our ancestral totem which continues to haunt me day and night. This is why I use it in my creations.

You paint and you also create sculptures. What do you like about each technique and is there any that you prefer?
Even if it happens that a father may hate one of these children, being the father of these works, I love and adore them all. In each technique what I like is the level of creativity whose source I don’t know.

Any upcoming project or event you’d like to talk about?
Yes, there are several events going on but being a man of surprises I prefer not to say anything for the moment.

Any advice for fellow emerging artists that you’d like to share? Advice, only hard work pays and above all never give up. Do research day and night to nourish your Art, because it needs oxygen like any human being.

And last question: What are your hopes for the future?
My hope for the future is to conquer the whole world with my Art and that from generation to generation people can talk about me.
